Things Every Warehouse Should Have

Written by Javier Asuncion on . Posted in News

Working in a warehouse entails a lot of danger. Elevated areas, opens spaces and mishandling of machinery are just some of its characteristics that pose a threat to human safety. In fact, the warehouse is one of the most hazardous places to work for. Warehouses workers are very prone to accidents.

This is why warehouses should prioritize the safety of its workers. Here we rounded up four things a warehouse should have to optimize safety.

1. Labels, names and proper signage

Each and every material in the warehouse should be properly labelled and named. This simple procedure alone can save a lot of lives. Labelling everything, from machineries to storage boxes should be labelled, to give workers idea on what the boxes contain. Imagine a scenario where a worker is reaching for a large unlabeled box on top of another and then a third box falls to him from the struggle to get the unlabeled box, just to see what it contains. From there alone, a life is at stake. So ensuring that everything is labeled is pretty crucial. Also, specify the appropriate way of handling the materials. And store them in solid and stable containers like steel racks or light duty racks.

2. Guard railings and anti-slip tape or paint

Since warehouses are big places full of high areas and hard edges, falls are one of the most common accidents encountered. Accidents like these are very grave, as a fall may injure a worker for life or leave him incapacitated. So it is important that warehouses have guard railings where falling is at great risk. Aside from falling, slipping is another mishap met in warehouses. For this, opt to put anti-slip tape or anti-slip painting. Mats are also recommended.

3. Personal safety gear

Each employee should have his own safety gear. Personal safety equipment should consist of helmets, face masks, safety goggles, gloves, vests, kneepads, and ear and respiratory protection. Following the warehouse racking system in the Philippines entails lifting heavy materials, so an employee should also be trained to life heavy objects, but should also be mindful of his limit, so further injury is prevented.

4. First Aid Kit

Every household should have a first-aid kit. The urgency of this need is doubled, if not tripled or five more times, as a warehouse is more hazardous than any other workplace out there. Warehouses should stack up on these kits with the probability of accidents is 4 out of 5. These kits should contain bandages, adhesive tape, pads, ammonia inhalants, a cold pack, hot compress, aspirin, cotton applicators, gloves, scissors and tweezers, among other things. Instructions should also be printed, as to how these are used.
