The country’s young math geniuses competed during the national finals of the 2019 Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge (MMC) National Finals, held last March 30, 2019 at the Metrobank Plaza Auditorium in Makati City.

Out of the 403,707 students who competed in the nationwide elimination rounds, a total of 22 students representing 10 regions have qualified and made the cut for the opportunity to advance in the final leg of the math competition.

The national finals showcased the mathematical proficiency of Grade 6 and Grade 10 students who competed in individual and team categories. The challenge consisted of solving complex mathematical problems mentally within 15 seconds and additional rounds of 30-second and one-minute questions using pen and paper.

Winners were awarded by the guest of honor, Education secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones, who also delivered an inspirational message to inspire the young audience.

“The food that you eat, the clothes that you wear, the chairs that you sit on, the buildings that you occupy, and the houses that you live in are made my people who took up Mathematics” the secretary said. “Congratulations to Metrobank Foundation, to the Mathematics association, the students are really in your hands. We look forward building a better world, a better country, a better Philippines for all of us” she added.

Mohammad Nur Casib of My Precious Child Learning Center (Marawi City) was the first placer in the Grade 6 Individual Competition, while Tracy Lauren Lei of Saint Jude Catholic School Manila (City of Manila) and Miguel Cayetano of Tuguegarao West Central School (Tuguegarao City) were second and third placers, respectively.

For the Grade 6 Team Competition, Tracy Lauren Lei and Nicholas Marcus Lua of Saint Jude Catholic School (City of Manila) were the 1st placers while Francis Rafael Flor and Muhammad Farouk Tan II of Silangan Elementary School (Taguig City) placed second.

For the Grade 10 Individual Competition, Bryce Ainsley Sanchez of Grace Christian College (Quezon City) was the 1st placer, while Stephen James Ty of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School (Zamboanga City) settled at 2nd and Kiel Sam Talosig of Bataan National High School (Balanga City) placed 3rd.

In the Grade 10 Team Competition, Stephen James Ty and Aiman Andrei Kue of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School (Zamboanga City) were the 1st placers. Paul Samson Topacio and Al Patrick Castro of Makati Science High School (Makati City) placed 2nd while Charles Dwight Pelaez and Joerenz Espillardo of Quezon Science High School (Tayabas, Quezon) were 3rd.

“This year, we celebrate Metrobank Foundation’s 40th anniversary with the theme, “Puso at Sigasig”. Our mathletes have certainly displayed the zeal to persevere throughout the competition. All of them have dedicated many hours to train and get to where they are now” said MBFI president Aniceto Sobrepeña. “We thank our implementing partners – the Department of Education under the leadership of Secretary Briones and the Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines headed by Sr. Coronel. I would also like to thank our judges, our school administrators, teachers, coaches and parents for your continued support” he added.

Grade 6 and Grade 10 national winners received trophies, medals and cash prizes more than PhP 500,000. Meanwhile, all of the participants received giveaways sponsored by Casio Philippines and Manila Tytana Colleges.

Now on its 18th year, MMC is the most widely participated math competition in the country among elementary and high school students. Over the years, MMC has produced national winners who get to compete and eventually win in international competitions.
