But which is the most abrasion-resistant fabric on the market right now?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abrasion is the wearing, grinding or rubbing away of a material by friction. An abrasion-resistant fabric resists such surface wear and can be used as a protective layer to extend product life or reduce risk of harm to people wearing it. Such fabrics are used across a range of industries with applications from backpacks and motorcycle apparel to reinforcement in the aerospace industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 600;\">How is abrasion resistance measured?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Firstly, there is an innate difficulty in comparing the abrasion resistance of different materials as there is no consensus on testing methods. The most commonly used tests are the Martindale, Wyzenbeck and Taber, so it is important to establish which test has been used as the number of \u201ccycles\u201d it takes for the fabric to show wear is not comparable from test to another.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the UK and Europe, the EN388 standard measures the performance of textiles for blade cut resistance, tear resistance, puncture resistance and abrasion resistance. The latter comprises four levels (levels 1-4) with the fabrics most resistant to heavy rubbing awarded level 4. The minimum test results required for each level are listed below. A fabric awarded level 2 is up to five times as resistant to wear as a fabric awarded level 1. A fabric graded level 3 offers four times the resistance of a fabric at level 2. For fabrics with multiple layers, the abrasion resistance level is derived from the most resistant layer, not the combination of layers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 600;\">Kevlar\u00ae<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kevlar\u00ae is a brand name synonymous with high protection. Engineered by DuPont\u2122 in the early 1970s, it is made from synthetic aramid fibers and offers cut and is traditionally bright yellow in colour. The material is commonly used in applications requiring high cut, abrasion or impact resistance, including body armour, bulletproof vests, protective gloves, and reinforcement in boats and aircraft. While it is renowned for its strength and durability, it is also one of the most expensive materials on the market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kevlar is also often used as a component in combination fabrics such as ARMORTEX\u00ae Developed by Nam Liong in Taiwan, ARMORTEX\u00ae contains synthetic fibers such as nylon, polyester and spandex and is reinforced with Kevlar\u00ae fiber for added strength. It is commonly used in protective clothing for forestry, waste recycling and manufacturing, as well as extreme sports.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 600;\">CORDURA\u00ae<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CORDURA\u00ae also offers a range of globally-renowned durable fabrics, known for its toughness and comfort. Original CORDURA\u00ae is a woven fabric made from high tenacity nylon and is used for a range of military, sports and leisure products including clothing, boots, tactical gear and backpacks.
